Snow days! So far, we have had 2 (as of today!), so we are going to need to make a couple of changes to the 2017-2018 School Calendar. The early dismissal schedule for Friday, May 25, 2018 has been cancelled and will be a full day of school. Tuesday, May 29, 2018 will now be a full day of school. The last day of school for students will be Wednesday, May 30, 2018 with a 3 hour early dismissal. We will keep you updated if there are any other changes to the 17-18 calendar. Let’s hope the spring weather is here to stay and there will not be any signs of snow days in the next couple of months.
Springtime brings many new beginnings and changes are occurring all around us. One change that I have had several questions about is the track project. Last fall when we began the track project, we had a plan to complete the project prior to Homecoming. As you can see, that did not happen. As we peeled up the track surface, we uncovered some structural base issues that needed to be corrected. Due to weather and timing, those corrections took longer than anticipated. It was not in the Districts best interest to put the actual track surface on due to the lateness in the school year. Currently, we are waiting for the frost to come out of the ground and the weather to warm up so that the track surface can be put down. We are planning on having the surface done by the end of March (weather permitting). Midwest Track and Field has assured us that we are first on their list this spring, so we are now just waiting on warmer weather.
Another topic that has been in the forefront of many of my conversations is that of school safety. I am heartbroken over the incident that happened in Florida recently and my prayers go out to all of the people who were involved. The Chariton School District has made several safety updates in the last few years to try to improve our facilities. Thanks to the support of all of you, we have sales tax and PPEL revenue to use for these kinds of updates. Recently we have updated our phone system in the entire district and the intercom systems at the elementary. Some of the other safety projects that we have completed include; fire alarm system updates @ CMS, new entry doors with buzz in entry @ Col/VA/MS, replacement of egress windows at Col, purchased a new bus radio system, purchased camera systems for all buildings, and updated locks on classroom doors. We are currently updating our camera system so that the Chariton Police Department are able to view them from their dispatch office. Our Buildings and Grounds committee continually review the needs of the district and prioritize projects. Safety is a priority for the District.
The District has a Safety Committee, made up of partners in law enforcement, emergency management, and the fire department, who work together to address issues and review our policies and practices. The committee has outlined a Standard Response Protocol that the school has adopted district-wide. These protocols are practiced and reviewed by both staff and students multiple times per year. The District teaches the ALICE protocol for situations that could involve an active shooter.
We will continue to be vigilant in our planning and in making safety improvements throughout the District. Thank you for working together with us to keep our children safe.
