Every fall, any junior or senior that has a cumulative average of 3.200 at Chariton High School is eligible for membership in the Chariotn High School National Honor Society.  Once the student is notified, he or she is asked to fill out an information sheet.  The sheet is copied and becomes a page in a booklet that contains the same inforamtion about other eligible students.  The information sheets are given to the faculty.  The faculty, remembering the students during their classes or when they have witnessed them in athletics or community events, read the ssheets and then discerns if the students are, in their opinion, eligible by rating them in three areas:  leadership, service, and character.  Finally the student is presented to a selection committee who has the final vote.  When a student meets the national requirements and standards, they are invited to join the society.  Students are then notified by mail.

There is a tapping ceremony in front of the study body during ADVISORY.  Students are recognized in front of the study body and given keys to represent acceptance into the NHS.  The formal induction is usually held the following Sunday at 2:00 in Johnson's Auditorium.  Students are sworn into the society and receive their pins and membership paper.
