The weather last Thursday didn't cooperate and our home wrestling meet and "Heavy Metal" theme night in the ChargerDome was cancelled. However, we are excited to have the opportunity to host a wrestling Triangular this Tuesday night vs. DM East and Wayne, and we will move the "Heavy Metal" theme to this night. We will also be recognizing our senior wrestlers, managers, and cheerleaders this night, so please plan to attend. It should be a fun evening!
Congratulations to our wrestling team as they completed in a very tough Centerville tournament over the weekend. Senior Gabe Ruepke was the Champion in his weight division, and several other Chargers placed in their fields. The Charger wrestlers will travel to Corning this Friday and Saturday for another highly competitive meet.
Our basketball teams have a big week in front of them, with home games vs. Centerville on Friday and then Saturday night @ Knoxville. The Knoxville game is their annual "Go Pink" cancer awareness/prevention fundraiser, and if you haven't been to this game--it is really amazing to see what our two teams and communities can do! I encourage you to attend and support our teams and this great cause if you can!

On Wednesday, I sent you a video link to view a clip from Brett Ledbetter. I hope you were able to view that 17 minute video, and I trust that if you were--it was valuable to you. Ledbetter is the author of the book, "What Drives Winning" and is a well-known speaker around America. After seeing this clip earlier this week, I began looking at some of his other video clips on YouTube. They are all great, and if you have some extra time, I would encourage you to do the same. Below is another short video that I hope you will watch.
MAKE it a GREAT week, Chargers!

It is really hard to believe that the holiday season has arrived! I hope that you enjoy your time with family and friends this Christmas, and I hope that you will get some much needed rest. The Christmas season is a time to rejoice and also a time to reflect on the year that is coming to a close...Jon Gordon says that we should have a heart like that of a child on Christmas morning--thankful for the gifts we already have and excited about the gifts we will receive in the future. Merry Christmas Chargers!
Another busy week lies ahead of us as we close out the first half of the year. Our basketball teams play three times in four days this week, and our wrestlers travel to Fairfield on Thursday night. Finish strong!
We will meet this Wednesday morning for "Coaches Coffee" at 7:00 in the high school commons. The focus of our time this Wednesday will be the next two chapters in the 3D Coaching Book (Chapters 4 and 5). I hope to see you there!

I included a couple of humorous videos for you to enjoy this week. Many of you may have already seen these two video clips from comedian John Crist. I hope you are able to laugh and relieve a little holiday stress this week!

Last week was a busy one for Charger Nation! The girls basketball team picked up 2 big SCC wins against Albia and Knoxville, and though the boys lost 2 close ones against the same foes, we are confident they will bounce back this Tuesday night at Centerville. The basketball conference seems very competitive early on, so the SCC Champion may have 2 or 3 conference losses when it is all said and done. I want to compliment and thank our home crowds this week--we had a great atmosphere both nights in the ChargerDome.
Our wrestling team competed well in their first SCC quad this past Thursday, beating Clarke of Osceola and Moravia, and falling to Albia. The team competed at the Dan Christensen Invitational on Saturday in Leon, with Dylin Harberts and Gabe Ruepke placing second overall in their weight divisions. The team will travel to Davis County this Thursday night for their second SCC competition where they will face Centerville and Davis County.
The middle school basketball and wrestling teams are also competing at high levels this winter. The MS wrestling team travels to Eddyville on Monday night and Truro (Interstate 35) Tuesday, and our basketball teams host and travel to Eddyville on Thursday night. If you haven't been to CMS to watch our young groups compete, I encourage you to do so this Thursday night!

JOY is a word you see often during the Holiday Season....When you coach, do you coach "with" and "for" joy, or do we coach and promote our practice as "work.?" Take a look at this short 2 minute video from Jeff Duke (3 Dimensional Coaching)....Jeff challenges us to coach with joy, creating a culture of joy on our teams instead of a culture of work...

Well, it will take but a glance at the weekly calendar for you to see that we are in "full blown" winter season mode this week! We have a LOT going on at Chariton, in Des Moines, and all around Southern Iowa this last week of November.... I'm excited as our kids begin to get out there and display their hard work, dedication, and their talents.
A special wish of good luck to our Drill Team, who will compete in the State Dance Competition this Thursday afternoon and evening. The girls will show off their Jazz routine at 4:20 on Thursday afternoon at Hy-Vee Hall, and then compete in the Hip-Hop dance at Wells Fargo Arena that evening at 6:42. Our girls and coaches have worked extremely hard on these dances, and we are proud of them! Best wishes on a great time in Des Moines!
Our boys and girls basketball teams will host their first games of the season this Thursday, and our wresting team begins their season Thursday night at Oskaloosa. It is awesome to see that we have 30+ kids wrestling this year, and we wish them the best of luck as they go through a grueling season on the mats.
We will meet Wednesday morning for Coaches Coffee at 7am in the High School Commons. I hope you can attend!
Please remember that the HyVee Christmas Party is this Saturday in the ChargerDome, beginning at 5:30pm. If you can sign up to help during one of the two shifts, it would be greatly appreciated. Please also encourage your athletes to sign up if they haven't already. It is a really nice meal for the employees of HyVee, and they cannot do it without our help. Thank you in advance for your help.

Happy Thanksgiving to all of you! It is my wish that you all enjoy the holiday week with family and friends.... and, if anyone loves to shop on Black Friday--I applaud your bravery and patience!
The "Meet the Chargers" scrimmage will be Monday evening at 5:30. I have attached a schedule below. This is a great time to meet the winter sports teams, as well as the cheerleaders and drill team. Girls basketball lost a close game on Saturday afternoon against Carlisle to start their season. Boys basketball and wrestling get underway next week. Our MS basketball teams are off and running too, with the girls picking up 2 wins on Thursday vs. Clarke.
We will meet on Wednesday morning for "Coaches Coffee" at 7:00am in the HS Commons. Our focus will be chapter 3 of the "3D Coaching" book. I hope you are able to attend, and as always--I encourage you to bring someone with you! No better way to start the Thanksgiving Holiday than a good breakfast and fellowship with other coaches, right?
Please keep December 1st on your radar, as we have been asked once again to help with the Hy-Vee Christmas Party. Coaches, parents, and kids will help serve, clean up, and prepare tables during two separate shifts. The first shift will be 4:45-6:15pm, while the second shift is 6:00-7:30pm. The time goes very quickly, and Hy-Vee feeds all workers (really well I might add!). They need (8) adults and (18) students each shift, and students can earn Silver Cord hours for this activity. I will be sending out a sign up early this week, so please plan to help if you can, and encourage your kids to help too. Thank you in advance for the great help!
At our coaches meeting at the beginning of the year, I challenged us all to show our thankfulness to others by writing thank you notes throughout the year. Have you done this? If not, take some time to do this soon...I will tell you that it will not only benefit the recipient, but you as well. Jon Gordon says, "It is impossible to be grateful and stressed out at the same time." We are entering a time of the year that can be stressful for many, so take care of yourself and others by showing your gratefulness...
Coaches, you don't hear it enough--THANK YOU! Our school and community is incredibly blessed to have such great coaches working with our kids.... Listen to the words of the Kenny Chesney song below ("Coach"). Some may tell you now, some may tell you later, and some may never say it....but what you are doing in the lives of our students is awesome and will impact them forever--Thank you-

November 13th, 2017
The frost on the grass this morning is another sign that the winter season is fast approaching.....
Our winter teams are in full swing this week, as the middle school teams play against Clarke this Thursday. The varsity girls basketball team will open their season in a tournament this Saturday afternoon vs. Carlisle at Newton High School, beginning at 1:00. HERE WE GO!
We are very proud of our Honor Cheerleaders, who will be cheering at the Iowa High School Football Championships at UNI this Friday. Congratulations to Paige Donahue, Gizzy Keeler, Ashley Gress, and Coach Smith on this accomplishment!
Looking ahead, it is time to get our kids signed up to help at the Annual Hy-Vee Christmas Party on December 2nd. As usual, the kids will be helping to serve and clean up during the meal. More information will be coming soon!

Congratulations go out to Megan Auwles, Hayle Mullins, and Kaiti Farrell for their performances at the State Solo Dance Competition on Saturday. Megan was 3rd, Hayle was 10th, and Kaiti got a Division One rating! I know this is something that these girls (and coaches) worked extremely hard for, and we are proud of you! The Drill Team will be performing at the State Drill Team Competition in 3 weeks in Des Moines.....best of luck as you continue working toward this!
Our fall teams will be holding their end of the season banquets this week. We have a lot to celebrate with our teams and individuals, so enjoy this time together with kids and parents...
Girls basketball practice starts on Monday, with wrestling and boys basketball practice starting next week. Our middle school basketball teams and wrestling team have also begun practice for the winter season. Best wishes to all of our coaches and athletes!
This Saturday is Veteran's Day. Please make sure you take time to remember the sacrifice that men and women have made and are continuing to make to preserve our freedom and liberties. The video below is an older ESPN Veteran's Day tribute.
No games this week, but the winter season will begin gearing up next week! Get ready for a fun winter!
Make it a GREAT week, Chargers!

I hope you all enjoyed a great weekend. Many will say that this weekend's Cy-Hawk game was the "best of all time." It certainly was exciting to watch, and both teams showed many positives that should encourage their fan base. As hard as it is for this die-hard Hawk to say....I think we can both be proud of our teams. But, the Hawks did win, so there's that... :)
Another busy weeks lies before us as we move into the middle of September. Before we know it, that autumn chill will be in the air and our fall seasons will be on the downward side of the hill. Make sure you take advantage to get out and support our teams and individuals. I have been very proud of our fall programs and how they are competing early in the season...
How have you done with the weekly "thank you's?" Have you taken the time to send one in the past week? We have much to be thankful for, and we shouldn't isolate this feeling to just one day in November. Make it a priority to be thankful...every day!
Our first "Coaches Coffee" will be Wednesday, September 20th. If you haven't received a book but would like one, just let me know.

I saw this quote this past week, and thought it was great...Too many times, we are (I am) guilty of looking elsewhere and wishing we had what others have. I think that is a natural feeling to have at times....but, what if we changed our mindset about "the grass on the other side?" What if, instead of wishing we had what others have, we changed OUR FOCUS on making what we have better? What if it wasn't even about thinking something was "better", but was just a change in our own perspective of what we actually have? We have a lot to be proud of--continue to make what we have even better!
MAKE it a great week, CHARGERS!
August 27th, 2017
Week 1 is in the books and we are off and running... We had a great first week at CHS, and I have heard many similar things from CMS, Van Allen, Columbus, and the Pre-School. 2017-2018 is going to be a great school year!
Thank you to all those who were able to come out Friday night to watch our 9/VAR football teams, band, cheerleaders, and drill teams perform. It was a great night of weather, and I thought all of our kids competed well. The VAR football squad came up just short against a veteran 3A Panther team, but showed that this is a much improved team from a year ago! The Chargers have quite a long haul this Friday night as they travel to Keokuk to face another large 3A program. We hope that with the long Labor Day weekend ahead, many red and white fans will make the journey east on highway 34 to cheer on the Chargers.
The CHS volleyball teams had impressive games at Wayne and at Pleasantville last week, and played well this past Saturday at the Clarke Invitational Tournament. The Chargers finished 2nd in their pool play and advanced to the Championship brackett where they lost to class 5A DM Lincoln. The girls are fun to watch, and they are showing improvement and a never-quit attitude early in the season. The 9/JV/VAR teams will host EBF this Tuesday in the ChargerDome--be there to support our teams!
Best wishes also go out to our boys and girls cross country teams as they begin their regular seasons this Thursday night at Wayne. I know they have been working hard to condition themselves for a promising year, and we are excited for them as they begin competition.
Coaches....thank you for taking the time to complete your concussion training. I am very proud that so many of our coaches have already completed this training--even if they don't coach until the winter, spring, and summer seasons. If you haven't done so already, please take 30 minutes to complete the training this week.
If you would like a book, "3D Coaching" for the book study, please let me know this as well as soon as possible.

I read this internet article earlier this week, and although it is titled about a football coaches wife, ANY coaches spouse can be inserted into the article. Coaches, as you know, your spouse sacrifices so much to enable you to do what you love to do. Let's strive to acknowledge this sacrifice and truly thank our spouses as they "stand in the gap" for us on a regular basis. Coaching is hard, but I think many of us will agree that our spouses have a far more difficult time at home, work, and in the stands during our seasons.... I hope you will read the article and share it with someone this week...
We are proud of you, Chargers! MAKE it a GREAT week--
August 20th, 2017
Welcome to the 2017-2018 school year!
As we begin the school year, I thought this information was important to share. For the 16th consecutive year, the state of Iowa ranks #19 in the nation in high school participation numbers! Our boys and girls both saw increases in the 16-17 school year. What is more impressive is the fact that the 18 states ahead of Iowa all have significantly higher populations! That says a lot about Iowa and how important high school athletics/activities are...
The volleyball and football teams both open up play this week. The volleyball teams travel to Wayne on Tuesday and Pleasantville this Friday. Our football teams host Knoxville Friday night at Reynolds Field. Best wishes to both programs, as well as the drill team, band, and cheerleaders!
I have been very proud of our fall teams, their coaches and players. They are working extremely hard, and I am certain we will see some great things in the coming year. Please make it a point to get out and support them when/if you can!
Have you seen the video of the retired Navy Seal Admiral? Very good stuff, especially since he focuses on a very small, menial daily task! Do the little things!
Make it a great week, Chargers!
