April 23rd, 2018

FINALLY! Looking at the weather for the week can't help but make us all smile....we have certainly waited for this! With a full week of activities, I hope you are able to get outdoors and enjoy the warm sunshine to cheer on the Chargers...

"America's Athletic Classic," the Drake Relays will be this Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at Drake Stadium. Junior Jackson Fisher competes Friday morning at 9:45am in the high jump. Fisher's jump of 6'6" is the 7th best out of 24 individuals who qualified for the Relays. Qualifying for Drake is such an awesome accomplishment because they only take 24 individuals in this event from all 4 classes! We will be cheering loud for him and know he will be representing the RED and WHITE in a great way!

The two home track meets we have this week will be hosted by Wayne, Corydon on Tuesday night and at Eddyville Blakesburg Fremont on Thursday night. As mentioned before, we are very thankful for their willingness to help us during the construction. I also want to thank those of you who have been willing to travel to these schools to lend a hand for the meet. I can't tell you how much your help is appreciated...

The track painters are scheduled to be in Chariton this week. We will know more on Tuesday, but there is a good chance that our last home track meet on April 30th will be hosted in CHARITON! We are praying for favorable conditions this week and a crew that works quickly! It would be so exciting to host at least one meet in Chariton, so stay tuned--more information to follow early in the week!

MAKE IT A GREAT WEEK, CHARGERS!

TIM

April 16th, 2018

**I apologize--before today, I have had trouble uploading my weekly emails onto the website!**

Well...it seems like each week my message is a broken record of weather craziness! All we can say is, "Gotta love Iowa!"

We did catch a break with the weather last week, and Midwest Track was able to come down to Chariton on Wednesday and Thursday to finish the track surface! They did a fantastic job, and it really looks great! Their last minute trip here did force our soccer teams to be flexible in moving game locations to Northwest Park on Thursday evening....I want to thank Coach Pierschbacher and Coach St. Lawrence for being open to this change, and I would also like to thank Brett White for his work to prepare Northwest Park and to create a makeshift track on the practice field for our athletes. Everyone this spring has worked together to make the most of this difficult situation, and I am so thankful for that!

Midwest Track will return the week of April 23rd to paint and complete the project. I can't wait to see the finished product!

Our spring athletes are doing some fantastic things...soccer, golf, and track teams and individuals are all competing well, and our boys and girls tennis teams are showing a great amount of improvement from last year to this spring. Currently, our boys tennis team is undefeated, and our girls tennis team picked up a big win this past Tuesday night at Saydel! As you can see below, we will host a few home events this week as we near the middle of the spring season... We did reschedule our boys JV/VAR soccer games with Knoxville for Monday night @ Knoxville, and will now host the Knoxville boys JV/VAR on Friday. Despite challenges with postponed games, we are doing our best to get games rescheduled...

A few weeks ago, I had the opportunity to hear legendary Iowa Hawkeye Quarterback Chuck Long speak about his new book, "Destined for Greatness."

In the book, Long focuses on 16 key points that everyone should live and abide by in order to be successful in life (Long wore #16 at Iowa). Many of you are living and doing these things, but I felt it was something I wanted to share with you:

1. Never Underestimate Your Influence

2. Think Outside the Box

3. Don't Leave Things up to Chance--PREPARE.

4. Positivity is Powerful

5. Perspective--"When you do common things in life in an uncommon way, you command the attention of the world--George Washington Carver"

6. Communicate

7. Be Persistent

8. Show up on Time

9. Offer a Firm Handshake with a SMILE

10. Do What You Say You Will Do

11. Finish The Job

12. Say Please and Thank You

13. Remember Where You Came From

14. Build Relationships

15. Be Socially Responsible--Give Back

16. Never Stop Asking Questions

MAKE IT A GREAT WEEK, CHARGERS!

February 19th, 2018

Congratulations go out to Senior Gabe Ruepke on his 3rd place finish at the State Wrestling Meet this past weekend. Gabe finishes his career with over 100 victories, is a 4-time State Qualifier, and is the only Charger in history to place at state every year! Gabe had a great season, and a tremendous career! Thank you to all the students and fans who were able to travel to Wells Fargo this past week to help cheer on and support him...

Our girls basketball season came to an end this past week at the hands of a very good North Polk team (that later qualified for the State Tournament). Congratulations go out to our girls and our coaches on an outstanding season. These seniors helped Chariton to 48 Varsity wins in their career, which is the best of any group in recent memory. We had a great following to North Polk on Wednesday, and hope that Charger fans will travel to Carlisle Monday night as our boys begin post-season play vs. Pella. Game time Monday is 6:30!

Mark you calendars for the Annual Fellowship of Christian Athletes "Coaches Appreciation Banquet" at Carpenter's Hall on March 8th. This is always an enjoyable evening as our local FCA group says "thank you" for your influence, your work, and your dedication to our young people. Coaches and their spouse/significant other are invited to a FREE catered meal, and there will be door prizes available! You won't want to miss it!

January 29th, 2018

This past week, we learned post-season assignments for our girls basketball team, boys basketball team, and our new district assignment in football. It it always exciting to have these revealed, and I want to share this information with you so that you can help inform those who may ask...

The girls basketball team will host Centerville in the 1st round of District play on February 10th @ 7:00pm. Should the girls advance past this game, they will play in the District Final on February 14th at North Polk, and then on to the Substate Final Game at Colo-Nesco on February 17th. Please plan to be in the ChargerDome on the 10th to cheer our girls on to victory!

The boys basketball district teams were released also. We won't know who we play for another week and a half, but we know the date. Their first round district game is February 19th @ TBA. The teams in Substate 6 are: Bondurant-Farrar, Carlisle, Centerville, Chariton, Knoxville, Oskaloosa, Pella, and Saydel. As with the girls, we hope you will plan to come and support the boys on the 19th!

District football pairings were released for the next two years (2018-2019). Once again, Chariton will be competing in class 2A. The other teams in the district are: Saydel, Clarke, Centerville, Des Moines Christian, and PCM. Because there are only 6 total teams in the district, the Chargers will play 4 non district games for the next two falls to fill out their 9 game season. These games/teams are yet to be decided at this point, but should be finalized in early March. A main change to the playoff system for the next two years is that only the district champion will automatically qualify for the state playoffs, with 7 other teams getting an "at large" bid based on an RPI rating. The RPI score will come from 3 components--our win/loss record, our opponent's win/loss record, and our opponent's opponent's win loss record.... Although this is quite different from what we have had in the past, we are optimistic with this change and are excited to see how the next two seasons unfold!

Our wrestlers will begin their post-season tournament run this Saturday at North Polk as they compete in Sectionals starting at noon. The Chargers competed in Fairfield this past weekend, with Gabe Ruepke once again claiming the championship at 132lbs. Four other Chariton wrestlers finished as place-winners. We hope to see you in the stands on Saturday at North Polk!

We will plan to meet this Wednesday morning at 7am for "Coaches Coffee." We will be looking at Chapters 6 (Knowing Your Turf), and 7 (Getting the Stuff). Hope you can make it!

MAKE  it a GREAT WEEK, CHARGERS!

January 15th, 2018

The weather last Thursday didn't cooperate and our home wrestling meet and "Heavy Metal" theme night in the ChargerDome was cancelled. However, we are excited to have the opportunity to host a wrestling Triangular this Tuesday night vs. DM East and Wayne, and we will move the "Heavy Metal" theme to this night. We will also be recognizing our senior wrestlers, managers, and cheerleaders this night, so please plan to attend. It should be a fun evening!

Congratulations to our wrestling team as they completed in a very tough Centerville tournament over the weekend. Senior Gabe Ruepke was the Champion in his weight division, and several other Chargers placed in their fields. The Charger wrestlers will travel to Corning this Friday and Saturday for another highly competitive meet.

Our basketball teams have a big week in front of them, with home games vs. Centerville on Friday and then Saturday night @ Knoxville. The Knoxville game is their annual "Go Pink" cancer awareness/prevention fundraiser, and if you haven't been to this game--it is really amazing to see what our two teams and communities can do! I encourage you to attend and support our teams and this great cause if you can!

On Wednesday, I sent you a video link to view a clip from Brett Ledbetter. I hope you were able to view that 17 minute video, and I trust that if you were--it was valuable to you. Ledbetter is the author of the book, "What Drives Winning" and is a well-known speaker around America. After seeing this clip earlier this week, I began looking at some of his other video clips on YouTube. They are all great, and if you have some extra time, I would encourage you to do the same. Below is another short video that I hope you will watch.

It is really hard to believe that the holiday season has arrived! I hope that you enjoy your time with family and friends this Christmas, and I hope that you will get some much needed rest. The Christmas season is a time to rejoice and also a time to reflect on the year that is coming to a close...Jon Gordon says that we should have a heart like that of a child on Christmas morning--thankful for the gifts we already have and excited about the gifts we will receive in the future. Merry Christmas Chargers!

Another busy week lies ahead of us as we close out the first half of the year. Our basketball teams play three times in four days this week, and our wrestlers travel to Fairfield on Thursday night. Finish strong!

We will meet this Wednesday morning for "Coaches Coffee" at 7:00 in the high school commons. The focus of our time this Wednesday will be the next two chapters in the 3D Coaching Book (Chapters 4 and 5). I hope to see you there!

December 11th, 2017
Last week was a busy one for Charger Nation! The girls basketball team picked up 2 big SCC wins against Albia and Knoxville, and though the boys lost 2 close ones against the same foes, we are confident they will bounce back this Tuesday night at Centerville. The basketball conference seems very competitive early on, so the SCC Champion may have 2 or 3 conference losses when it is all said and done. I want to compliment and thank our home crowds this week--we had a great atmosphere both nights in the ChargerDome.

Our wrestling team competed well in their first SCC quad this past Thursday, beating Clarke of Osceola and Moravia, and falling to Albia. The team competed at the Dan Christensen Invitational on Saturday in Leon, with Dylin Harberts and Gabe Ruepke placing second overall in their weight divisions. The team will travel to Davis County this Thursday night for their second SCC competition where they will face Centerville and Davis County.

The middle school basketball and wrestling teams are also competing at high levels this winter. The MS wrestling team travels to Eddyville on Monday night and Truro (Interstate 35) Tuesday, and our basketball teams host and travel to Eddyville on Thursday night. If you haven't been to CMS to watch our young groups compete, I encourage you to do so this Thursday night!

JOY is a word you see often during the Holiday Season....When you coach, do you coach "with" and "for" joy, or do we coach and promote our practice as "work.?" Take a look at this short 2 minute video from Jeff Duke (3 Dimensional Coaching)....Jeff challenges us to coach with joy, creating a culture of joy on our teams instead of a culture of work...

Well, it will take but a glance at the weekly calendar for you to see that we are in "full blown" winter season mode this week! We have a LOT going on at Chariton, in Des Moines, and all around Southern Iowa this last week of November.... I'm excited as our kids begin to get out there and display their hard work, dedication, and their talents.

A special wish of good luck to our Drill Team, who will compete in the State Dance Competition this Thursday afternoon and evening. The girls will show off their Jazz routine at 4:20 on Thursday afternoon at Hy-Vee Hall, and then compete in the Hip-Hop dance at Wells Fargo Arena that evening at 6:42. Our girls and coaches have worked extremely hard on these dances, and we are proud of them! Best wishes on a great time in Des Moines!

Our boys and girls basketball teams will host their first games of the season this Thursday, and our wresting team begins their season Thursday night at Oskaloosa. It is awesome to see that we have 30+ kids wrestling this year, and we wish them the best of luck as they go through a grueling season on the mats.

We will meet Wednesday morning for Coaches Coffee at 7am in the High School Commons. I hope you can attend!

Please remember that the HyVee Christmas Party is this Saturday in the ChargerDome, beginning at 5:30pm. If you can sign up to help during one of the two shifts, it would be greatly appreciated. Please also encourage your athletes to sign up if they haven't already. It is a really nice meal for the employees of HyVee, and they cannot do it without our help. Thank you in advance for your help.

November 20th, 2017

Happy Thanksgiving to all of you! It is my wish that you all enjoy the holiday week with family and friends.... and, if anyone loves to shop on Black Friday--I applaud your bravery and patience!

The "Meet the Chargers" scrimmage will be Monday evening at 5:30. I have attached a schedule below. This is a great time to meet the winter sports teams, as well as the cheerleaders and drill team. Girls basketball lost a close game on Saturday afternoon against Carlisle to start their season. Boys basketball and wrestling get underway next week. Our MS basketball teams are off and running too, with the girls picking up 2 wins on Thursday vs. Clarke.

We will meet on Wednesday morning for "Coaches Coffee" at 7:00am in the HS Commons. Our focus will be chapter 3 of the "3D Coaching" book. I hope you are able to attend, and as always--I encourage you to bring someone with you! No better way to start the Thanksgiving Holiday than a good breakfast and fellowship with other coaches, right?

Please keep December 1st on your radar, as we have been asked once again to help with the Hy-Vee Christmas Party.  Coaches, parents, and kids will help serve, clean up, and prepare tables during two separate shifts. The first shift will be 4:45-6:15pm, while the second shift is 6:00-7:30pm. The time goes very quickly, and Hy-Vee feeds all workers (really well I might add!). They need (8) adults and (18) students each shift, and students can earn Silver Cord hours for this activity. I will be sending out a sign up early this week, so please plan to help if you can, and encourage your kids to help too. Thank you in advance for the great help!

At our coaches meeting at the beginning of the year, I challenged us all to show our thankfulness to others by writing thank you notes throughout the year. Have you done this? If not, take some time to do this soon...I will tell you that it will not only benefit the recipient, but you as well. Jon Gordon says, "It is impossible to be grateful and stressed out at the same time."  We are entering a time of the year that can be stressful for many, so take care of yourself and others by showing your gratefulness...

Coaches, you don't hear it enough--THANK YOU! Our school and community is incredibly blessed to have such great coaches working with our kids.... Listen to the words of the Kenny Chesney song below ("Coach"). Some may tell you now, some may tell you later, and some may never say it....but what you are doing in the lives of our students is awesome and will impact them forever--Thank you-

The frost on the grass this morning is another sign that the winter season is fast approaching.....

Our winter teams are in full swing this week, as the middle school teams play against Clarke this Thursday. The varsity girls basketball team will open their season in a tournament this Saturday afternoon vs. Carlisle at Newton High School, beginning at 1:00. HERE WE GO!

We are very proud of our Honor Cheerleaders, who will be cheering at the Iowa High School Football Championships at UNI this Friday. Congratulations to Paige Donahue, Gizzy Keeler, Ashley Gress, and Coach Smith on this accomplishment!

Looking ahead, it is time to get our kids signed up to help at the Annual Hy-Vee Christmas Party on December 2nd. As usual, the kids will be helping to serve and clean up during the meal. More information will be coming soon!

Congratulations go out to Megan Auwles, Hayle Mullins, and Kaiti Farrell for their performances at the State Solo Dance Competition on Saturday. Megan was 3rd, Hayle was 10th, and Kaiti got a Division One rating! I know this is something that these girls (and coaches) worked extremely hard for, and we are proud of you! The Drill Team will be performing at the State Drill Team Competition in 3 weeks in Des Moines.....best of luck as you continue working toward this!

Our fall teams will be holding their end of the season banquets this week. We have a lot to celebrate with our teams and individuals, so enjoy this time together with kids and parents...

Girls basketball practice starts on Monday, with wrestling and boys basketball practice starting next week. Our middle school basketball teams and wrestling team have also begun practice for the winter season. Best wishes to all of our coaches and athletes!

This Saturday is Veteran's Day. Please make sure you take time to remember the sacrifice that men and women have made and are continuing to make to preserve our freedom and liberties. The video below is an older ESPN Veteran's Day tribute.

No games this week, but the winter season will begin gearing up next week! Get ready for a fun winter!

September 10th, 2017

I hope you all enjoyed a great weekend. Many will say that this weekend's Cy-Hawk game was the "best of all time." It certainly was exciting to watch, and both teams showed many positives that should encourage their fan base. As hard as it is for this die-hard Hawk to say....I think we can both be proud of our teams. But, the Hawks did win, so there's that... :)

Another busy weeks lies before us as we move into the middle of September. Before we know it, that autumn chill will be in the air and our fall seasons will be on the downward side of the hill. Make sure you take advantage to get out and support our teams and individuals. I have been very proud of our fall programs and how they are competing early in the season...

How have you done with the weekly "thank you's?" Have you taken the time to send one in the past week? We have much to be thankful for, and we shouldn't isolate this feeling to just one day in November. Make it a priority to be thankful...every day!

Our first "Coaches Coffee" will be Wednesday, September 20th. If you haven't received a book but would like one, just let me know.

I saw this quote this past week, and thought it was great...Too many times, we are (I am) guilty of looking elsewhere and wishing we had what others have. I think that is a natural feeling to have at times....but, what if we changed our mindset about "the grass on the other side?" What if, instead of wishing we had what others have, we changed OUR FOCUS on making what we have better? What if it wasn't even about thinking something was "better", but was just a change in our own perspective of what we actually have? We have a lot to be proud of--continue to make what we have even better!

MAKE it a great week, CHARGERS!

August 27th, 2017

Week 1 is in the books and we are off and running... We had a great first week at CHS, and I have heard many similar things from CMS, Van Allen, Columbus, and the Pre-School. 2017-2018 is going to be a great school year!

Thank you to all those who were able to come out Friday night to watch our 9/VAR football teams, band, cheerleaders, and drill teams perform. It was a great night of weather, and I thought all of our kids competed well. The VAR football squad came up just short against a veteran 3A Panther team, but showed that this is a much improved team from a year ago! The Chargers have quite a long haul this Friday night as they travel to Keokuk to face another large 3A program. We hope that with the long Labor Day weekend ahead, many red and white fans will make the journey east on highway 34 to cheer on the Chargers.

The CHS volleyball teams had impressive games at Wayne and at Pleasantville last week, and played well this past Saturday at the Clarke Invitational Tournament. The Chargers finished 2nd in their pool play and advanced to the Championship brackett where they lost to class 5A DM Lincoln. The girls are fun to watch, and they are showing improvement and a never-quit attitude early in the season. The 9/JV/VAR teams will host EBF this Tuesday in the ChargerDome--be there to support our teams!

Best wishes also go out to our boys and girls cross country teams as they begin their regular seasons this Thursday night at Wayne. I know they have been working hard to condition themselves for a promising year, and we are excited for them as they begin competition.

Coaches....thank you for taking the time to complete your concussion training. I am very proud that so many of our coaches have already completed this training--even if they don't coach until the winter, spring, and summer seasons. If you haven't done so already, please take 30 minutes to complete the training this week.

If you would like a book, "3D Coaching" for the book study, please let me know this as well as soon as possible.

I read this internet article earlier this week, and although it is titled about a football coaches wife, ANY coaches spouse can be inserted into the article. Coaches, as you know, your spouse sacrifices so much to enable you to do what you love to do. Let's strive to acknowledge this sacrifice and truly thank our spouses as they "stand in the gap" for us on a regular basis. Coaching is hard, but I think many of us will agree that our spouses have a far more difficult time at home, work, and in the stands during our seasons.... I hope you will read the article and share it with someone this week...

August 20th, 2017

Welcome to the 2017-2018 school year!

As we begin the school year, I thought this information was important to share. For the 16th consecutive year, the state of Iowa ranks #19 in the nation in high school participation numbers! Our boys and girls both saw increases in the 16-17 school year. What is more impressive is the fact that the 18 states ahead of Iowa all have significantly higher populations! That says a lot about Iowa and how important high school athletics/activities are...

The volleyball and football teams both open up play this week. The volleyball teams travel to Wayne on Tuesday and Pleasantville this Friday. Our football teams host Knoxville Friday night at Reynolds Field. Best wishes to both programs, as well as the drill team, band, and cheerleaders!

I have been very proud of our fall teams, their coaches and players. They are working extremely hard, and I am certain we will see some great things in the coming year. Please make it a point to get out and support them when/if you can!

This week...

Have you seen the video of the retired Navy Seal Admiral? Very good stuff, especially since he focuses on a very small, menial daily task! Do the little things!

Make it a great week, Chargers!
